Where is Oney?
We searched the back roads
in the area around Binger, Oklahoma.

Oklahoma Bound?

Did you ever hear of a town
And set out to find that place?
It’s fun, you should try it
Hopefully you’ll find a trace

For many little tiny towns
Barely even got a start
But it sure is fun to hunt for it
There’s excitement in your heart

Sometimes you discover that
It’s still the size it was at first
Only parts of buildings now are gone
As though there was a curse

A ghost town often times it is
Kinda makes you sad, doesn’t it?
There is no store for folks to shop
No restaurant in which to sit

But you know, it’s still part of history
There’s such beauty in these towns
Oney is one of them you can find
If you’re Oklahoma bound!

Found this old farm house
which was sinking into the ground

Sale

We stopped at a garage sale for directions

Old Post Office

Oney is not on an Oklahoma map
Found the old Post Office at Albert
Used to be the smallest P.O. in country
Inside were the Oney school trophies.

New Post Office

Than we found the new Post Office at Albert

Besides the new Post Office
was the old Post Office sign

… an abandoned school

A post office and a church
Was a big part of this little town

It was a friendly summer day as
The sun was shining down.

Where is Oney?

Oney is much loved and talked about
but not on a road map so be alert
Oney exists mostly in people’s mind
The Post Office in town says Albert

People on the east side of main street
claim that they live in Oney every day
Families on west side of main street
claim Albert and want it no other way

RICHARD P. ONEY Genealogy
Ran away from home at age 15.
Died near Oney, Oklahoma in 1916.

Richard P. (Preston or Presley) Oney and Eliza Jane Tackett had 12 children.  Richard, though he was well liked and respected by his neighbors, had problems with alcohol and was a gambler. He died as a result of suicide by drinking carbolic acid in 1916. The town of Oney in Caddo County, Oklahoma was named for him. It is usually on the map as Albert. Everything in that town (the school, store, and cafe), except the post office are called Oney. Because the Post Office is called Albert, that is the way it is on the map.

Oney

Oh, where is Oney do you know?
I think I've found it now
I wouldn't have another thought
But Richard P. told me how

He said to tell his old hometown
That he is watching O're
Cause Oney drank the potion
That left him here no more.

Well, Oney was a happy chap
And lived the life he liked.
And as he walked along the streets
The Oney folks said Hi.

They uttered never not a word
Of Oney's drinking life
I wonder if he ever had a
Darlin' loving wife

The townsfolks all respected him
And loved him like he was
And when he died they named the town
Oney just because

It was a tiny, tiny town
Just a cafe, school and store
And a post office
That is ne're used no more

Above the door says Albert
That was put on the map
But Oney is a little town
Named for Oney__ a happy chap.

Standard Joke

WOW -- what a horrible way to die!!!!!!!!!! I thought you were joking when you asked, "Where is Oney" -- because it was a standard joke that people would say, "I'm gonna tell you "oney" one more time ... or "it's oney a little ways down the road." LOL

This was certainly a wonderful story and pleasant photos. I do enjoy the photos of buildings in the past and often get the "spirit" feelings of ones who walked and lived in those surroundings.  I sure have some strong feelings here. Thanks for sharing.

Glen W. Terry
One of Oney's finest

He was born in Henryetta, Oklahoma and died at home on the farm in Caddo County, Oney, Oklahoma.   He served in the Army during World War II and was a tank driver in the Philippines. At one point he was missing in action and there is a long story to this. From 1957 until the time of his death, he was a peanut farmer in Caddo, County -- belonged to the Farmer's Union. He was an honest man and his word was as good as any contract you could sign. We love him dearly and not a day goes by that we do think of him.
